The Sd.Kfz.234 is the successor of the eight wheeled armored cars Sd.Kfz.231 which were developed in the 30's. These new armored cars had a new design and a powerful engine. All axles are driven and steerable. The most advantage was the feature of two drivers - one for normal driving and one for backward driving. So they could drive back within seconds without turning, which was an important feature for a recon vehicle that the 234 initially was supposed to be. The weight of slightly below 12 tons and the 220hp engine allowed a top speed of around 90km/h!
The Sd.Kfz.234/4, also called "Pakwagen" was armed with the 7,5cm PaK40 L/46 in an open topped chassis and carried 12 shells for it in racks. The gun could be traversed 20 degrees left and right and had an elevation of -5 to +22 degrees.
Hitler ordered in November 1944 that this vehicle is to be produced on high priority and called it on a presentation in December 1944 one of the best solutions of the war.
There were only 89 Sd.Kfz.234/4 delivered from December 1944 until end of the war.

The Pakwagen was issued to some famous units like 4.PzDiv., Führer-Begleit Division, PzDiv."Müncheberg", PzDiv."Clausewitz", 21.PzDiv., 116.PzDiv.
